Children at Weddings: Helping Little Hearts Feel Safe on the Big Day

Weddings are exciting, emotional and full of big moments — and that applies to children too. When we think about a wedding ceremony, we often think about the happy couple, the vows, the rings, the laughter and, of course, the tears. But what about the children sitting in the room? As a wedding celebrant, I think it’s really important that we remember that a wedding ceremony can be a very big emotional experience for a child, especially when the people getting married are their mum and dad. Sometimes those tears can be confusing Children between roughly 7 and 12 years old can be particularly sensitive to what is happening around them. They may not be used to seeing their parents cry. They may not be used to seeing grandparents, aunties, uncles or other family members becoming emotional either. And while we adults understand that these are often happy tears, a child may simply see someone they love crying and think: “Are they okay?” “What’s wrong?” “Why is everyone crying?” That’s why I think having a little conversation with children before the wedding can make such a difference. Explain to them what a wedding ceremony is going to be like. Tell them that there may be laughter, there may be tears and there may be lots of emotions — but that they’re all part of the happiness of the day.   You could even say: “You might see Mammy or Daddy cry during the ceremony, but don’t worry. They’re happy tears because they’re so happy to be marrying each other.” That little bit of preparation can give a child reassurance and help them understand what they’re seeing rather than becoming worried or overwhelmed. And then we have our little ones! Children from around one to four years old are a completely different story! Let’s be honest — expecting a toddler to sit quietly and still for 20 or 30 minutes isn’t always realistic. They’re little people with very short attention spans, and a wedding ceremony isn’t exactly designed around keeping a toddler entertained! They may get distracted. They may wriggle. They may want to explore. They may decide that this is the perfect moment to have a conversation with the person sitting beside them! And that’s okay. One little tip I often recommend is to bring something along that the child hasn’t seen before. It doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated. A new colouring book, a small toy, some colouring pencils or another quiet activity can give them something to focus on during the ceremony. The key word is new. Something they’ve never seen before can be far more interesting than the toy they’ve had for the last six months!   If they become upset, let them find their safe place And this is one I feel quite strongly about. If a young child becomes upset during a ceremony, I believe it’s important that, where possible, they are allowed to go to their parent. A child who is already overwhelmed doesn’t necessarily understand why somebody they don’t know as well is taking them out of the room. They may interpret it as: “I’ve done something wrong.” And that’s the last thing we want. They haven’t done anything wrong. They’re simply being a child in a very busy, emotional and unfamiliar environment. If Mum or Dad is their safe place, let them go to Mum or Dad. Sometimes a cuddle, a little reassurance and a few quiet words are all they need before they’re ready to come back in. And sometimes they’re not ready to come back in — and that’s okay too! There is no such thing as a “perfectly behaved” child at a wedding I always say that children are part of the family story, and if they’re important enough to be included in the wedding, then we have to allow them to be themselves too. A wedding ceremony doesn’t have to be completely silent and perfectly behaved from beginning to end. A little giggle. A wriggle. A whisper. A toddler waving at someone. A child getting emotional. These are all real-life moments. And sometimes, years later, those are the moments that make you smile when you look back at the day.   Let’s make them feel included, not worried For me, it’s all about preparation, reassurance and understanding. Talk to older children about what they might see and hear. Give younger children something to keep their little hands and minds busy. And most importantly, if a child becomes overwhelmed, remember that they haven’t misbehaved — they’re simply having a big moment in a big room. As celebrants, parents, grandparents and guests, we can all play a part in making children feel safe and included. Because a wedding isn’t just about two people saying “I do.” It’s about bringing together the people they love most — and that includes the little people too.  Your Day, Your Way — and that includes making sure everyone feels comfortable enough to enjoy it.

Proud to Be Named 2026 International Country Celebrant Winner for Ireland, Dublin

Winning an award is always a very special moment, and I’m incredibly proud to share that I have been named the 2026 International Country Celebrant Winner for Ireland, Dublin at the International Wedding Awards. But for me, winning an award has never really been about the award itself. It’s about the recognition behind it. Every couple who chooses me to be their wedding celebrant is putting their trust in me to create and deliver a ceremony that is personal, meaningful and completely their day, their way. I never take that trust for granted. My hope is always that when my couples look back on their wedding day many years from now, they will remember not only how beautiful the day was, but how their ceremony made them feel — and that it will hold special memories for them for a lifetime. I am incredibly passionate about what I do. I put my heart into every ceremony and give 110% to every couple, because I genuinely believe that every love story deserves to be celebrated in a way that is unique to them. So yes, winning awards is beautiful. It’s a wonderful acknowledgement of the time, passion and dedication I put into my work, and I am very proud to have this recognition. But ultimately, I believe we are all winners in life. The real reward for me is seeing two people standing in front of their family and friends, making their promises to one another, and knowing that I have played a small part in creating a moment they will remember forever. That is what makes being a celebrant so special to me. And today, I’m taking a moment to celebrate this achievement and to say a very heartfelt thank you to every couple who has trusted me to be part of their wedding day. shelley I couldn’t have achieved this without you.  2026 International Country Celebrant Winner – Ireland, Dublin

It’s Perfectly Normal to be Nervous on Your Wedding Day

It’s Perfectly Normal to be Nervous on Your Wedding Day

Every couple is different, and that’s exactly how it should be. One thing I always say to my couples is this: it’s completely normal to feel nervous on your wedding day. Standing in front of 100 or more people, knowing every eye is on you, can feel overwhelming. Not everyone enjoys being the centre of attention, and that’s okay. That’s why I always give my couples a choice during the ceremony. They can sit side-on, looking towards their guests, or with their backs to them. It’s never about being rude—it’s about creating a space where they feel comfortable, relaxed and able to enjoy one of the biggest moments of their lives. This beautiful bride Beaudine  my 2nd cousin-in-law  told me she was was feeling  a little nervous before the ceremony, but after seeing this photograph and hearing her tell me how comfortable and at ease she felt and enjoyed her ceremony  I knew I’d done my job. Being a legal wedding celebrant in Ireland isn’t just about delivering a ceremony. It’s about listening, understanding and making sure every couple feels supported, seen and able to be themselves. I may not always get it 100% right but I strive to learn every day to be the best version of myself and to deliver the best ceremony for all my couples. Moments like this are exactly why I love what I do.

Outdoor vs Indoor Wedding Ceremonies in Ireland-What Should You Choose

Outdoor vs Indoor Wedding Ceremonies in Ireland-What Should You Choose?

For years, outdoor wedding ceremonies have been the dream. We scroll through beautiful weddings in Spain, Portugal and Italy, with couples exchanging vows under blue skies surrounded by sunshine. And as Ireland enjoys warmer summers thanks to our changing climate, more couples are asking the question: “Should we have our ceremony outdoors?” The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think. The Appeal of an Outdoor Ceremony There’s no denying it—an outdoor ceremony can be absolutely magical. Natural light, beautiful gardens, views and the feeling of being surrounded by nature all make for a stunning setting. If the weather behaves, it can create a truly unforgettable experience. But unlike many European destinations, Ireland isn’t quite geared up for outdoor ceremonies in the same way. While we may be getting more warm, sunny days, we also need to think about how those conditions affect everyone attending your wedding—not just the photographs. Think About Your Guests One thing couples often overlook is guest comfort. Most male guests will be wearing shirts, ties and jackets. Many women will also be dressed for a formal occasion. These outfits aren’t designed for sitting in direct sunshine for 30 or 40 minutes. A warm summer’s day can quickly become uncomfortable. Guests may become overheated, feel faint or simply struggle to enjoy the ceremony. If you’re close to water, insects such as mosquitoes or horseflies can also become an unexpected distraction. And here’s something people don’t often consider… If you’re worrying about your guests throughout the ceremony, it shows. As a Wedding Celebrant in Ireland, I can tell you that your concern can be reflected in your expressions and, ultimately, in your photographs. Instead of being fully present in the moment, you’re wondering whether everyone is comfortable. If You Choose an Outdoor Ceremony… An outdoor ceremony can work beautifully with a little planning. Here are three simple tips to help everyone enjoy it. 1. Keep Your Guests Hydrated Have chilled bottles of water or a water station available before the ceremony begins. It’s a small touch that makes a huge difference on a warm day. 2. Be Prepared for Insects If your venue is near lakes, rivers or woodland, have insect repellent available for guests. Hopefully it won’t be needed, but everyone will appreciate having the option. 3. Keep It Short and Stay Shaded 4  Sunscreen I can’t shout enough about this one bring a basket with a couple of bottles of sunscreen in it for your guests  the Sun can be deceiving and you don’t want anyone getting sunstroke on your watch A concise ceremony is often the most enjoyable. If you’re the couple standing in full sun, especially the bride in several layers of fabric, make sure there’s some form of shade available. A discreet parasol or umbrella can keep you comfortable without taking away from the occasion. Don’t Overlook the Benefits of an Indoor Ceremony While outdoor ceremonies are beautiful, indoor ceremonies offer something that’s often underestimated: comfort. Everyone is relaxed, seated comfortably and protected from whatever the Irish weather decides to do. Many venues are climate-controlled, so whether it’s unexpectedly warm or there’s a sudden shower, nobody has to worry. The atmosphere is calm, everyone can focus on the ceremony itself, and you’ll feel more at ease knowing your guests are comfortable. And here’s the best part… Choosing an indoor ceremony doesn’t mean missing out on beautiful outdoor photographs. You can still have your drinks reception outside, wander the gardens with your photographer, enjoy the sunshine and capture all those natural, relaxed images you’ve been dreaming of. In many ways, you get the best of both worlds—the comfort of an indoor ceremony and the beauty of Ireland’s landscape for your portraits. The Best Choice Is the One That Fits Your Day There isn’t a right or wrong answer. If you’ve always dreamed of saying your vows outdoors, then absolutely go for it—but plan carefully and put guest comfort first. If you’re leaning towards an indoor ceremony, don’t feel you’re compromising. In fact, you may find that everyone is more relaxed, your timeline flows more smoothly, and you still enjoy every bit of the beautiful Irish scenery afterwards. At the end of the day, your guests won’t remember whether your ceremony was inside or outside nearly as much as they’ll remember how they felt. A comfortable, happy wedding is always a memorable one—and those genuine smiles are what make the very best photographs.

Wedding Planning Doesn’t Have to Be Stressful – It’s All About the Administration

When couples first get engaged, the excitement is incredible. Before you know it, ideas are flowing, venues are being viewed, and inspiration boards are filling up. It’s such a special time, but it’s also very easy to become overwhelmed. One of the biggest pieces of advice I give every couple is this: don’t rush your wedding planning. Planning a wedding isn’t something you need to squeeze into five minutes after work or discuss while you’re both tired. That’s often when stress starts to creep in. Instead, choose one evening each week that’s dedicated to your wedding planning. Make it something to look forward to. Turn off your phones, order your favourite takeaway, pour yourselves a drink, and sit down together with your wedding folder or laptop. Spend an hour or two working through one part of your wedding. One week it might be your table plan. The next week it could be finalising your guest list. Another week you could be choosing your ceremony readings or music. Breaking everything down into manageable chunks makes the whole process feel much more enjoyable and far less stressful. One thing I would avoid is greeting your partner at the door after a long day at work with, “We need to sort the wedding!” Neither of you will be in the right frame of mind, and what should be an exciting conversation can quickly become another chore. Treat your wedding planning like a date night instead. It’s something you’re creating together, and those planning evenings can become lovely memories in themselves. My Biggest Tip If I could give every couple just one piece of advice, it would be this: Keep the number of people involved in planning your wedding to a minimum. Your wedding day is about the two of you. Of course, family and friends often mean well, but the more people you ask for opinions, the more opinions you’ll receive. Before long, you’ll find yourselves trying to please everyone else instead of making decisions that feel right for you. Remember, there isn’t a “right” way to have a wedding ceremony. The perfect ceremony is the one that reflects your personalities, your story, and your relationship. Listen to advice if you want to, but don’t ever feel obliged to follow it. Trust yourselves. After all, years from now, you’ll remember how your wedding made you feel—not whether every guest agreed with every decision. Enjoy the planning, take it one step at a time, and remember that your wedding should be a celebration of your love, not a source of unnecessary stress. Happy planning! Love is Love – And It Has Been My Privilege to Witness It

As Pride has just been celebrated across Ireland, I’ve found myself reflecting on just how fortunate I am to do what I do. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of standing alongside so many couples as they begin married life together. Among those have been many same-sex couples, and every single ceremony has reminded me of one simple truth: love is love. To me, there has never been a distinction between the couples I marry. Every wedding is unique because every couple is unique—not because of who they love, but because of the story they’ve written together and the promises they’re choosing to make for the future. Ireland hasn’t always been the country it is today. We’ve come a long way in recognising that everyone deserves the same rights, the same respect, and the same opportunity to celebrate their love. While there’s still work to be done to ensure true equality and inclusion for everyone, I’m incredibly proud to live in a country that chose compassion, fairness, and love. As a celebrant, I’ve been invited into some of life’s most meaningful moments. I’ve watched couples exchange vows surrounded by the people they love. I’ve celebrated with them as newlyweds. And for some, I’ve had the joy of seeing their next chapters unfold—welcoming children, growing their families, and building beautiful lives together. Those are the moments that stay with me. Being trusted with such an important day is never something I take for granted. Whether I’m marrying a bride and groom, two brides, or two grooms, the honour is exactly the same. My role is simply to tell their story, celebrate their love, and create a ceremony that feels authentic to who they are. Pride is a celebration, but it’s also a reminder of the journey that made these moments possible. It’s a reminder that love deserves to be celebrated in all its forms and that everyone should have the freedom to say “I do” to the person they love. I feel incredibly privileged to have been part of so many wonderful love stories, and I look forward to being part of many more. Because at the end of the day, that’s exactly what they are—love stories. And love has never needed a label. Happy pride to all my couples , love to you all.
